I can remember Sargents when they were at The Parade, North End, Felbridge, East Grinstead.

It was in the years 1972/3/4.

I was a young boy of 15 and started work in their parts department under Mike Wilson the parts manager (who drove a white Sunbeam Alpine H120), and his second in command Chris Wayne.

There was also a chap with the nick name ‘olly beak’ (can’t remember his proper name), together with a filing clark called Anne.

I was in the parts department for just over a year before I started my apprenticeship, and went into the workshop under Ken Baker the workshop foreman. Unfortunately I never did complete my apprenticeship

There were quite a few people in the workshop then:

Terry Durham, Pete Curtis, Gorden Brown, Eddy ? Mr Taylor and Georgina (The receptionists) and The ‘Govs’ Mr Ken Sargent together with John Sargent.

There was also my namesake ‘Val’ the car cleaner, who smoked a pipe just like the forman Ken Baker!

Seem to remember some other chap doing the servicing over at the back of the car showroom called Basil. Those were the days.

I went back quite a few years ago (2001), and there was a VW Dealer there (Sidlow), bought a new Passat from them.

They’ve since closed down, now there’s a Wicks there.

I stumbled on this site by accident, strange enough there’s also a Sargeants Garage over in Goudhurst (Kent) not too far from me.

Ps. I was at The Motor Show which was being held at Earls Court many years ago (late 70’s) and I bumped into John Sargent.

I bought a pristine condition Audi S4 from Damon a few weeks ago.

I was over the moon with my purchase but disappointment came after only 2 weeks of owning the car when the the A/C suddenly stopped working.

After investigation by an Audi specialist it turned out the the fault was terminal and a new compressor and condensor was required.

When Damon offered to totally foot the huge repair bill I was delighted and more than a little relieved. I don’t expect many if any used car dealers would have done this.

Most days I view your site looking longingly at your RS’s which makes me hark back to the days I used to ride my push bike over to Mike Youngs RS Dealer in Ilford (long since gone) and press my nose up against the window….
Now days with 4 kids and a Volvo XC90 I can do but dream.
