This bike really should appeal to any buyer that places great importance on originality, and known ownership provenance, two of the most important factors, in our view, when purchasing any collectible car or motorcycle. Everything else is present, including all handbooks/manuals/owner’s wallet, and all keys including the number tag.

The Ducati 998 was the last of the Massimo Tamburini designed 916/996/998 lineage and differed greatly from it’s forebears in utilising the then new ‘Testastretta’ motor, literally translated as ‘Narrow Head’ enabling a reduced included angle between the valves, this allowing bigger valves, and necessitating significant re-engineering and re-location of one half of the desmodromic valve gear.
In higher ‘S’ specification, as with our bike here, the motor produced 136 bhp (140 ps) in line with the previous 996 R, which used essentially the same motor, and was significantly up on the previous range topping 996 SPS’s 123 bhp. and the ‘standard’ 998 Testastretta’s (identical) 123bhp. The motor also utilised higher specification materials for the the con rods, valves and pistons, and had a ‘deep sump’ which naturally made for cooler internal crankcase temperatures.
The rest of the ‘S’ enhancements focused on fully adjustable TiN coated Showa forks with a fully adjustable Ohlins rear shock unit, lighter Marchesini rims, and optional (fitted here) full Termignoni exhaust system with accompanying re-map/ECU chip, alongside Gold Brembo 4 piston calipers, 320mm dia. front brake discs, steering damper, quick release fairings and body panels, and an easily replaceable dry clutch (of course)
Many would say that that these bikes are the most focused, beautifully designed motorcycle there has ever been. Whether or not that is the case, if ever a bike was destined to become a future classic, well, this is it, and 27 years after it’s launch, any 916/996/998 Ducati, from a Biposto, to an S/SPS, to an R, remains a thing of beauty, and hugely desirable. This particular bike is truly lovely, and we have owned it personally for a number of years. New MOT provided at point of sale
