MODEL SUMMARY.
UK supplied Ducati 996 R in Ducati Rosso Corsa with lightweight Marchesini 5 spoke rims. 2001 51 Registered
These are a very special machine built by Ducati Corse solely for the purpose of race homologation, and thus allowing new technical innovations and design to be used on the race bikes. A total of 500 bikes were produced, but just 350 of those were made available to the public worldwide, and so these are a rare machine with only a handful ever available on the market, anywhere. The bikes, most unusually, were sold via the internet, ultimately to be collected through the dealer network, and reputedly all were sold within 6 hours of being made available, with the purchase price equating to around £24000 (26000 Euros)
The great significance of the 996 R, vs the hitherto top of the line 996 SPS that preceded it, was the introduction of the new and much revised engine. Still with Desmodromic valve actuation, of course, it was named ‘Testastretta’ due to it’s narrow head design. In simple terms, the new head design allowed a more optimal valve angle and size. The motor was very short stroke, and higher revving than the previous Desmoquattro, and in fact, contrary to it’s nomenclature, of 998cc. Very oversquare with a 100.0mm bore and 63.5mm stroke it featured Sand cast engine cases, Titanium conrods, Lightweight pistons, Big valve heads, Deep sump, Lightweight crankshaft and a Carbon fibre airbox, and when hooked up to the ‘Race’ Termignonis with dedicated ECU the motor produced 135bhp and 77 lb/ft which were quite astonishing figures for the day. That only tells half the story though. Anyone with an appreciation of these things will instantly notice how quickly the motor responds to the throttle, and with such a hard edged note, totally different to it’s lesser brethren. An engineering jewel, and a quite magnificent, highly exotic engine
The specification included the best of everything, the afforementioned Carbon fibre airbox, Carbon fibre fairings, Carbon fibre tank lower panels, Carbon fibre belly pan / undertray, Carbon fibre front hugger, Carbon fibre exhaust heat shield, Carbon fibre swingarm protector, Carbon fibre chain guard, Monoposto seat unit in Red/White, Fully adjustable 43mm dia. Ohlins forks, Fully adjustable Ohlins rear shock, Fully adjustable Ohlins steering damper, Unique Brembo Gold calipers with thinner 320mm dia. front discs and 4 pads per caliper, Lightweight Marchesini 5 spoke wheels in Grey, Single sided swingarm and Adjustable levers with Brembo master cylinders and remote reservoirs
This particular bike was supplied new in the UK by Ducati franchised dealers M&S Motorcycles of Newcastle. It has had 4 owners, with complete known ownership from new, with the last owning it since 2012 having purchased it from franchised Ducati dealers DMC Moto in Preston. It has come directly to us from him and has extensive documented service history including it’s original service book, all original manuals/handbooks, service bills/invoices and every old MOT. It also has it’s original PDI document and a previous bill of sale and all original keys are present
It has just had timing belts and new Champion RG4 HC spark plugs, and recent fully synthetic oil, air filter, brake/clutch fluids, and up to date valve clearance check. As new Michelin Pilot Power 2CT tyres are also fitted. Mileage is 26000, the majority of which was covered early in the bike’s life by it’s second and third owners, but the condition totally belies this, incredibly so, and the bike is genuinely a real showstopper. it is hard to imagine one nicer and it remains totally standard, original and as Ducati intended other than for a Ducati Performance open clutch cover with anodised pressure plate and STM clutch basket, and an Oberon clutch slave cylinder
These bikes are few and far between, and many that come to market are imported machines of which very little of their history and/or provenance is known. You pays your money, but this bike will appeal to any buyer that places great importance on originality, and ownership provenance, two of the most important factors, in our view, when purchasing any collectible car or motorcycle. The ownership, paperwork and known provenance trail, and the originality, of this UK supplied example cannot be over emphasised. Meticulously cared for throughout it’s life, with us just completing the belt and plug service due on timescale, it needs nothing at all
A wonderful machine, rare, special, quite beautiful
