MODEL SUMMARY.
Exceptional, original, unmodified example of a Gilera RV 250 NGR in Red/Silver/Black. These were sold in the Italian market only, and to call this bike rare is a massive understatement. Reportedly, there are 2 others in the UK. Well, that may or may not be, but we cannot find another for sale on any of the obvious sites Europe wide. Comparatively, Hen’s Teeth grow on trees
Manufactured in 1989, and registered on an ‘F’ prefix plate, the bike was brought over from Italy in 1999 by it’s collector owner. It remained essentially unused for 19 years, until purchased by it’s 2nd UK owner in 2018. He was a conscientious type, with mechanical know how, and gently recommissioned the bike with new fluids, brake pads, tyres, battery, CDI unit, tank flush, carb strip/clean, bearings/linkages stripped/cleaned etc, etc. All the things one has to do with a bike that has had minimal usage
So what we have today, is a virginal bike. Completely original and standard specification, in a quite amazing time warp type condition, and one which starts, runs and rides beautifully. Electric start is most welcome, and it is quite fabulous how easy, and untemperamentally this bike starts and settles in to an even idle.
What is it ? Well its a 38bhp 250cc liquid cooled single, with rotary valve induction and electric start, with a top speed of around 100mph, and spritely acceleration to match. Aimed at the likes of Yamaha’s RD250 and Suzuki’s RG250 of course in the late ’80s. Of very high technical specification, it has Marzocchi forks, Brembo brakes, gas filled rear monoshock, engine balancer shaft, separate oil injection and a thermostatically controlled fan.
Just 2 UK owners since 1999, and 4750 miles (7600 km) from new ensure that this bike presents a rare opportunity for any buyer that values mileage and provenance highly.
Documentation is extensive, and includes it’s original owner’s manual (only ever published in Italian) an original catalogue of spare parts, original technical/repair manual, further technical documentation, period sales brochure, period road tests, old V5s and all original keys.
The previous owner has collated all key servicing information in to an easily ‘at a glance’ format and there really is everything here that one would need to know. He had also collected various parts including a NOS piston and 3 sets of rings, brake calipers, and numerous other hard to find parts. In spite of it’s rarity, one time Gilera UK Concessionaires Bob Wright Motorcycles of Somerset can source and supply a huge amount of mechanical parts for these machines.
A 250cc single cylinder ‘ring-a-ding’ 2 stroke, or smoker as they are affectionately referred to, is a different riding experience with no low down power, torque or engine braking. The little motor needs to be revved, but when it is it will sing in a way no 4 stroke ever will. Just fabulous
This particular bike is a joy to behold for anyone that values originality. A step back in time. In spite of it’s relatively humble specification it would a grace any collection very nicely, and would serve wonderfully for high days and holidays. One thing is for sure, you will not see another one out whilst riding it. What price exclusivity ? MOTd June 2020
