MODEL SUMMARY.
Very nice Yamaha XS650 Special. Registered in the UK from new in April 1980, on a ‘V’ suffix this is a matching numbers 3L1-00 chassis number variant which suggests a 1979 UK/European spec. XS650-E. Just 2 owners in the last 20 years (although a few more previously) it became Yellow in 1998 according to it’s then owner’s preferences, but would have been Black from the factory. The XS650 was produced in many variants across the years, with key differences between the respective year models and the US and European market types, and was most significant for being Yamaha‘s first four stroke motorcycle. Being a European spec. E model, this bike retains virtually all it’s originality with the characteristically shorter exhaust pipes, a side hinged distinctively stepped seat, cast 16” dia. wheels with a single disc at each end, steel side covers (as opposed to plastic) and a slightly smaller fuel tank with offset to the side filler cap. Concessions to ultimate originality include braided brake hoses, K&N cone filters, Hagon rear shocks (upgraded suitably period items) and lower, more comfortable (and in our view better looking) handlebars. It wears good matching Metzeler Lasertecs, and is MOTd until April 2017. Open both fuel taps, slide in the choke, and either using the kick start or electric start, it will burst in to life immediately, settling down to an even and suitably throaty idle. On the road, it rides and handles beautifully, with good performance and excellent handling and brakes. An emminently usable, depreciation proof, characterful classic motorcycle, at what we think is a very good price
