MODEL SUMMARY.
Exceptional, unmodified example of a launch specification Honda VTR1000 SP-1 Y in Winning Red
UK supplied by franchised Honda dealers J.S.Gedge of Hastings in East Sussex, it was pre-registered to them for one month between August and September 2001. It was then sold to it’s original owner whom retained possession of it for 17 years before then selling it to the second owner, a friend of his, in August 2018. It has now come directly to us from the second owner, whom retained it for around 7 years
With just 4700 miles from new, it is clear that this bike presents a rare opportunity for any buyer that values mileage and provenance highly
Totally standard, unmodified bike down to every last detail, hand built by Honda, and with peerless build quality and engineering. Just fabulous
Everything is present, including the original service book + all original manuals, original owner’s warranty card, original bill of sale, service bills/invoices, old MOTs, original Datatool documents, all keys (including number tag) and a clear HPI report. The unused as new factory pillion seat and toolkit are also provided
It has just had a Castrol Power 1 Racing fully synthetic oil service and is MOTd until May 2026
The original owner stopped using the bike in 2005 with the mileage at around 4500 miles. It was then stored, unused for the next 13 years, whereupon the second owner purchased it with it requiring a certain amount of mechanical recommissioning as is to be expected…
..this was completed diligently and meticulously by the second owner, with everything documented, and included all fluids and filters, new Pirelli Diablo Rosso ll tyres, new iridium spark plugs, new fuel pump, injectors ultrasonically cleaned, fuel tank cleaned/flushed etc, etc. Everything that was required was attended to and the bike has been subject to routine fluids servicing ever since, in spite of very minimal use in the hands of the second owner as well
The SP-1 is a significant model in Honda’s motorsport history, being developed solely to take on the might of the big Ducati twins in the late ’90s, early 2000s which totally dominated World Superbike racing. With the rules favouring twins over the 4-cylinder bikes with regard to capacity allowance, Honda felt that they had no choice but to design and build the SP-1 V-Twin HRC race bike. It proved to be the right decision, and with Colin Edwards aboard, the HRC built SP-1 took the World Superbike Championship title in it’s first competitive year, that being 2000, and again in 2002 on the essentially similar SP-2
The SP-1 also famously carried the late, great Joey Dunlop to his final ‘big bike’ TT win in June 2000, whilst in Vimto livery, less than one month before his untimely passing in Estonia
This particular bike is an absolute joy to ride, just perfect in every way, and far too good to be bought for general use, but would of course suit a collector, and would serve wonderfully for high days and holidays
Whilst there may be plenty of SP-1s to choose from, very few will match this one in terms of mileage, provenance, originality and condition, and it sets itself firmly apart from lesser examples
