The ‘SP’ was a limited production run with just 500 produced for the European market, and a further 500 of slightly differing spec. for the other worldwide markets, with most going to the US
It’s raison d’etre was, as with other homologation specials, a certain number had to be built with the specification that Yamaha required to race the bikes in various world series’
Each bike had a numbered plaque, demonstrating it’s authenticity, and production number, this one being number 47/500
They were set apart by a unique Gunsmoke Blue/Black colour scheme, fully adjustable 43mm dia. USD Ohlins forks with TiN coating, fully adjustable Ohlins rear shock unit, adjustable rear ride height via suspension linkage, lightweight forged aluminium Marchesini ‘Y-Spoke’ rims in Gold, combined starter button/lap timer switch, a slipper clutch and bespoke ‘R1’ tool kit
Based upon the 5VY 4th Generation bikes which were launched in 2004 and were the first production machines to meet a power to weight ratio of 1:1 i.e 172bhp for 172kg weight (or 1000 bhp/tonne) for a ‘dry’ bike. This naturally grew the R1’s fearsome reputation with a 175mph top speed, and one road test achieving the 1/4 mile in 9.9s

This particular bike is stock/standard and original, other than for Akrapovic SP exhausts (with the originals provided) in pristine condition, and with low ownership and a very proper service history with a huge amount of documentation present, including the original bill of sale.
